Help Can Find You! Setting Your Emergency Address in Teams

This article explains why it is important to tell your computer where you live when using Microsoft Teams at home, and how to set up that information so emergency help can find you quickly if needed. It also shows the difference between working on campus versus working from home or other places outside school.

Why This Matters for Emergency Calls

Old desk phones were tied to one spot in a building—like a name tag stuck to a chair. When people called 911, dispatchers knew exactly which room you were in because the phone was wired there.

Your new Teams phone travels with your computer! If you are at home or visiting someone else and dial 911, emergency workers need to know where your house is instead of sending help to the college campus. Without this information, they might not be able to reach you quickly when someone needs medical care or fire trucks.

On Campus: No Action Needed

When you are in a classroom, office, or library at school and call 911, nothing special is required. The college computer network automatically shares your exact building name, floor, and room number with emergency services the moment you dial. It works like a built-in GPS that only activates for emergencies.

At Home: You Must Tell Teams Your Address

When using Microsoft Teams from your home, apartment, or any place outside school, follow these simple steps to set up your location so help can find you fast:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams on your computer

  2. Click the Calls tab at the bottom of the screen

  3. Look for a message banner near the top that says "Confirm Your Location" or "Set Your Address"

  4. Click that text to open the address box

  5. Type in your exact home address: street number, apartment unit if applicable, city, and zip code

  6. Save the information

Your computer now remembers where you live for emergency calls only.

Your Information Is Safe

The address you type into Teams is private—only emergency services can see it when dialing 911. College staff cannot access your home location or use it to track you. The data stays in a secure system and is only shown during an actual emergency when someone needs help at your house instantly.

Think of it like telling your parents where you live so they can find you if you get lost, but the computer keeps that secret safe until someone truly needs it.
